5 Benefits of eLearning in the Construction Industry

Learn 5 amazing benefits of eLearning for the construction industry.

Very few would argue against the point that that construction industry is more complex now than it has ever been. The complexity of the industry has increased exponentially in recent years. Adoption and implementation of the International Building Code (IBC) throughout most of the United States has driven the increase in complexity. Other factors that have increased the complexity of the construction industry include government regulations imposed by agencies, including OSHA and the EPA, as well as severe weather events including hurricanes. All of these factors have contributed to a massive increase in project complexity.

These external environment factors have increased the complexity of projects in the construction industry. Projects of all sizes including new construction, as well as renovations of existing structures, have undergone a massive increase in complexity. Business owners and leaders are now faced with the responsibility of training their workforce to handle the increased complexity of operating a construction enterprise in today’s business environment.

These owners must now figure out how to increase the knowledge base of their employees quickly and in a cost-effective manner in order to meet the expectations of their customers at a cost that helps them remain competitive. The use of eLearning resources can help these leaders meet these demands and exceed customer expectations.

Here are 5 benefits that construction companies can realize by implementing eLearning as part of their overall employee training program:

1. Convenience – construction industry employers like to take advantage of down time in their project schedules in order to provide training for their employees. When using standard brick and mortar training resources, employers need to schedule employees to go to a site to be trained. By using eLearning resources, construction firms can implement training on the fly to take advantage of downtime on sites as a result of job delays such as inclement weather conditions.

2. Save Money – the cost for sending employees off site for training is much higher when compared to eLearning. The costs of training off site include travel, fuel, parking as well as airfare, hotels and per diem when the travel to the training site involves overnight stays. eLearning limits the costs of training by eliminating these associated costs.

3. Self-Paced for Employees – all employees learn at a different pace. Some employees learn content faster than others. And some go to a deeper level of understanding than other employees do. The use of eLearning technology allows employees to learn at a pace that more closely matches their learning styles instead of having to adopt the same pace as a larger group class.

4. Increased Retention – the saying goes “learning occurs at output.” People learn best when they can implement the knowledge that they have learned immediately into their day-to-day activities. By giving access to the knowledge they need when the need it, they can immediately implement what they have learned, which helps them increase their retention.

5. Simultaneous Delivery – many construction businesses operate with multiple locations and multiple construction sites. This provides a unique challenge for training managers who must deliver training to multiple sites. The use of eLearning resources allows construction trainers to provide training simultaneously across multiple sites. This is especially effective when dealing with compliance training.

Organizations and companies are faced with an external business environment that is continuing to increase in complexity at an exponential rate. The increase in complexity requires that organizations implement a technology-driven solution to help them do more with less. The use of eLearning technology systems in the construction industry, such as Construct-Ed, allows businesses to build the knowledge, skills and abilities of their workforce while maintaining a tight control on the costs associated with training that workforce.

I like how you mentioned that construction employees are able to train when they need it and apply it immediately which in turn helps increase their retention. This would be so beneficial to all construction companies and help them have better employee retention. Thanks for bringing up these huge benefits to online construction training.

It’s good to learn that you can save money working in construction by implementing eLearning as part of the employee training program. My brother is wanting to start working construction. I’ll be sure to tell him that he should find a company that offers eLearning as part of the training program.
